Thriving Beyond 50: Embrace Your Health Journey
It’s been said that aging is a privilege and with it comes wisdom. Sometimes, I wonder about it being a privilege as I see more wrinkles, my eyesight waning, and more.
I used to be an avid runner. I ran nearly every day of the week. As I aged, I noticed some stubborn weight gain so I ran longer and harder and ate fewer calories. To be honest, nothing significantly changed except my level of frustration.
I decided to seek out a personal trainer. She encouraged me to stop running and start strength training. I considered myself a fit and strong individual until I started working out with weights. “Feel the burn!” takes on new meaning when you start using weights during workouts! Twice a week, a walked from work to the gym to work out. I can’t say I loved it, but I did it. And, I’m so glad I did.
A consistent workout routine is, in my opinion, top priority. Especially as we age. My goals have shifted a bit. I’m now more focused on stability and flexibility, and have traded in my running shoes for walking shoes.
If you aren’t working out on a regular basis, you should. Let's dive into how you can create a fulfilling health journey focusing on getting started, consistency, and community.
1. Getting Started: The First Step to a Healthier You
- Assess Where You Are: Start by understanding your current health status. Talk with your doctor about creating a personalized health plan.
- Set Realistic Goals: Set achievable goals. You don’t have to run a half marathon out of the gate. Begin with small steps – like a daily walk.
- Find What You Love: Explore various physical activities to discover what excites you and makes you eager to move. I golf and play pickleball and I still run a few miles a week.
2. Consistency: The Key to Lasting Change
- Create a Routine: Establish a regular schedule for exercise and stick to it. Consistency builds habits, and habits create change.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Track your progress and celebrate every small victory. Some days, I just celebrate the fact that I made it to the gym! Victories will motivate you to keep going.
- Stay Patient: Remember, Rome wasn’t created in a day. Long-term change takes time.
3. Community: The Heart of Motivation
- Find Your Tribe: Whether it's a fitness class, walking group, or showing up at a gym, surround yourself with people who support your health journey.
- Stay Connected: Share your goals and progress with friends and family. Their encouragement can make a big difference.
- Engage in Group Activities: Participating in group events can be more fun and motivating. Golf, pickleball or health workshops are great ways to connect and learn.
Bottom Line: By focusing on getting started, setting realistic goals and being consistent, you can embrace a healthier, more vibrant life. Just take the first step and keep on moving. There are many online resources -- many free -- that you can tap into. You can do your workout at home or at a gym. Do whatever works for you.
